SPRINGFIELD – State Senator Napoleon Harris III passed a measure through the Senate that ensures long-term veterinary care for retired police dogs who have served the people of Illinois.

“These dogs serve bravely alongside our officers and deserve dignity, respect and care after their service ends,” said Harris (D-Harvey). “This legislation makes sure we honor their loyalty with the same commitment they’ve shown to us.”

House Bill 3140 establishes the Police K-9 Care Program and Police K-9 Care Fund. This is an initiative of the Illinois State Police Command Officers Association, which provides dedicated funding to support the medical needs of retired K-9 officers. Many of these animals have spent their entire lives training to protect and protecting communities across the state.

The new fund ensures that, as K-9 units transition out of active duty, there will be stable, consistent support available for their ongoing veterinary needs. Harris’ measure adds Illinois to a growing number of states recognizing the value and continued responsibility owed to these service animals.

“We ask a lot of K-9s in the line of duty, and caring for them in retirement is the least we can do,” said Harris.
