HARVEY – State Senator Napoleon Harris III announced that Harvey and Midlothian will receive a combined total of $350,000 through Illinois’ Safe Routes to School program to improve pedestrian safety and expand opportunities for children and families to safely walk and bike in their communities.
“One of our top priorities should always be to make sure our children can get to and from school safely,” said Harris (D-Harvey). “I worked to help secure these investments because every child deserves to feel safe and stay active in our community.”
The following projects in the 15th District received funding:
- $100,000 for the City of Harvey to host Walk & Roll to School events and create a traffic garden accompanied by safety instruction programs designed to educate children and families about pedestrian and bicycle safety.
- $250,000 for the Village of Midlothian and Kolmar Elementary School to construct a new sidewalk along the south side of 143rd St. and fill sidewalk gaps on Kenneth Ave., improving connectivity and pedestrian access for students and residents.
The Safe Routes to School program is administered by the Illinois Department of Transportation using federal funding to improve safety and encourage walking, biking and rolling to school. Projects funded through the program include sidewalk improvements, traffic safety measures, public education efforts and community outreach initiatives.
