Senator Napoleon Harris III will co-host a meeting for school officials, board members and the public with Rep. William Davis and Rep. Thaddeus Jones to discuss Senate Bill 16, a measure that would change the distribution of resources for school funding statewide. Staff from the Illinois State Board of Education and from Senator Andy Manar's office will attend to describe the scope of the bill and answer questions; Sen. Manar is the bill's sponsor. Here are the details:
Today, State Senator Napoleon Harris III (D-Harvey) hosted a Re-Employment Resource Fair at the Gloria Taylor Banquet Hall in Harvey.
The event helped residents from the community learn about job opportunities with the state and local companies. Central Management Services gave a presentation about the State’s application process and employment opportunities within the agency.
“The 15th Senate district has some of the most economically depressed communities in the state, mostly due to lack of jobs,” Sen. Harris said. “Our community needs jobs, plain and simple, and if I’m not helping find a solution then I’m part of the problem.”
At today’s event, the Illinois Department of Employment Securities provided attendees with resume help, information about the Illinois workNet program and other services to assist with improving attendee’s chances of finding employment.
“Helping people find jobs directly impacts our community’s economic sustainability,” Harris said. “It’s a proven fact that when unemployment increases, crime increases. I just want to do my part to help our neighborhoods reach their full potential.”
Several state agencies and private companies were also on hand to provide participants with information about job vacancies.
Are you currently either unemployed or underemployed? Do you or a member of your family need assistance with your job search and preparing for interviews?

Earlier this summer, I hosted a minority small business forum where representatives of the minority-owned business community, legislative leaders and representatives from the state government all came together to discuss government programs available to small business owners looking for a pathway to success in Illinois. The discussion focused on topics ranging from the obstacles small businesses face when seeking government contracts to how we can create more jobs for a wider range of workers, representing all backgrounds.
I believe that the overall success of the forum was showcased in the emphatic tone taken by several of the participants when calling for more job opportunities and a better, balanced business environment in Illinois.
I echo this sentiment and will be working hard to implement the ideas and suggestions put forth in this forum in the upcoming legislative year.
